June, 2nd 2014 was the night of the CFDA Fashion Awards. The event happens every year, and it recognizes the outstanding contributions made to American fashion. The awards are given for design excellence in womenswear, menswear, and accessories. I am always super curious to know who are the winners, because those are the most exciting names of fashion.
Joseph Altuzarra won the prize for the “Womenswear Designer of the year”. He is a true and very young talent: he launched his brand Altuzarra in 2008. Based in New York City, his multicultural and international education have always influenced his own designs. Born in Paris (in 1983 – he’s so young!) by a Chinese-American mother and a French Basque father, he graduated in Pennsylvania and then moved to New York City where he interned at Marc Jacobs and then went to Proenza Schouler. To improve his technical construction skills he went to work with patternmaker Nicolas Caïto (from Rochas). Then he moved back to Paris working as first assistant to Givenchy’s Riccardo Tisci.
Taking risks is his own fashion motto, as he has once said: “When you start a collection, you have to push yourself to limits that may make you uncomfortable”.
He sees his designs as modern, seductive and sexy. I can see sensuality but also an approach of easiness that I am in love with, and that makes me contemplate and stare at his creations only just for the sake of learning and of being inspired by.
