Summertime, and the livin’ is easy
Fish are jumpin’ and the cotton is high
Oh, your daddy’s rich and your ma is good-lookin’
So hush little baby, Don’t you cry
One of these mornings you’re gonna rise up singing
And you’ll spread your wings and you’ll take to the sky
But ’til that morning, there ain’t nothin’ can harm you
With Daddy and Mammy standin’ by
– George Gershwin –
I do not think there is a better description of summer than the one from Gershwin’s “Summertime”. Its sentence “…and the livin’ is easy” really says it all in a way so beautiful and floating that has always left me breathless.
Deconstructing summer, there are so many aspects I love about this favourite season of mine. The certainty of remaining young forever (a side-effect of the excess of sunlight, maybe?), and feeling it. Raising my head up to feel the sun so hot on my face. Waking up in the morning and opening the windows to experience the warmth. The glorious golden hour, the best free show every day – and for free! The pleasure when drinking fresh water. The carefreeness of wanting to elevate every occasion. Walking hand by hand with my beloved one beneath the sun. Wanting to experience every single thing as vividly as possible. Focusing on planning the future and daydreaming about it. Enjoying reading more because there’s light for longer. Not feeling the cold, never.
